NATIONAL CITY, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI) — National City is getting not just one, but two new Dutch Bros Coffees in 2026.

During its Oct. 20 meeting, the National City Planning Commission unanimously approved the construction of a new 950-square-foot Dutch Bros Coffee shop that would replace the vacant Pizza Hut in the Sweetwater Crossing shopping center at 1838 Sweetwater Road in National City.

The new coffee shop will have dual drive-through lanes that can accommodate up to 26 vehicles, and three parking spaces with additional spaces available in the adjacent shopping center. The building will also have a window for walk-up customers.

That Dutch Bros is slated to open sometime in late 2026 once construction is finished. The proposed hours would be 5 a.m. to midnight daily.

The new business is expected to employ between eight and 10 people, with the majority working on a part-time basis.

Another new Dutch Bros Coffee shop has already been approved and is currently under construction. It will be built and operational 1.5 miles from the 1838 Sweetwater Road site at 1606 East Plaza Blvd.

The Plaza Blvd Dutch Bros is slated to open in January 2026 and will be the first Dutch Bros in National City.

A job posting for a Broista at the Plaza Blvd location is open on the Dutch Bros website.

The coffee chain has been expanding in San Diego County since opening its first locations locally in North County in 2022. The first South Bay location opened in Chula Vista in March 2025.

Dutch Bros Coffee is a drive-thru-only coffee chain that started in Oregon in the early 1990s. They offer a variety of drink options mostly catered towards the Gen Z crowd, including specialty coffees, seasonal drinks, smoothies, teas, freezes, lemonades, exclusive Dutch Bros Rebel energy drinks and Nitro Cold Brew coffee.

As of Oct. 2025, the company now has more than 1,000 locations in 24 states.
