SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — A key stretch of Interstate 5 in San Diego will be closed again this weekend for construction work, Caltrans announced on Monday.

Interstate 5 south will be fully closed to drivers from State Route 52 (SR-52) to the Mission Bay Drive onramp from Friday, Nov. 7, at 9 p.m. to Monday, Nov. 10, at 5 a.m.

Crews will be working on the road and will be doing concrete slab replacement, according to Caltrans.

A detour is in place for drivers heading south this weekend.

Detour:

  • I-5 south drivers
    • Detoured onto Interstate 805 (I-805) at Sorrento Valley
    • connect to southbound State Route 163 (SR-163)
    • connect to westbound Interstate 8 (I-8)
    • then connect to I-5
  • I-805 south drivers
    • Can exit and enter I-5 at Genesee Avenue,
    • westbound La Jolla Village Drive,
    • and Nobel Drive

Caltrans is advising drivers that entrances and exits at Gilman Drive and the eastbound La Jolla
Village Drive will be closed, and vehicles driving south of Gilman will be detoured onto SR-52 east.

Vehicles heading west on SR-52 will be detoured onto La Jolla Parkway or I-5 north.

Vehicles driving east on La Jolla Parkway will not be able to connect to I-5 south and will be detoured onto SR-52 east.

Caltrans is warning businesses near Damon Avenue to expect construction noise and lighting during the weekend closure.

Public Transportation

Caltrans says all southbound Metropolitan Transit Service (MTS) bus routes from La Jolla and University Town Center (UTC) will be running as usual.

Bus route 30 travels from La Jolla to Old Town on the west side of I-5, while route 105 travels from UTC to Old Town on the east side of I-5.

Parking is available at the Nobel Drive and UTC stations. Blue Line Trolley service will remain available as an alternative to travel from Sorrento Valley to all points south.

This is the fourth of several full freeway closures part of the I-5 Asset Management Project.
