LA MESA, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI) — Authorities have identified the man killed while riding his bike on an eastern San Diego County bike path after colliding with another bicyclist.

The San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office has identified the man who died as David Engler, 68, of El Cajon. Police report he was not wearing a helmet at the time of the collision.

Engler and another bicyclist collided head-on while riding on the bike path surrounding Lake Murray near Kiowa Drive and Sunset Park in La Mesa early Friday, Sept. 19, police report.

Engler died of his injuries at the scene shortly before 8 a.m., according to the medical examiner. The other bicyclist was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

The medical examiner determined Engler’s death was from blunt force injuries and has been ruled accidental.

The San Diego Police Department’s Traffic Division is investigating the circumstances of the deadly bicycle collision.
