RAMONA, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI) — One person died in a solo vehicle crash last week on State Route 78.

The incident occurred Thursday around 3:45 p.m. eastbound on SR-78, located east of Weekend Villa Road, the California Highway Patrol said in a news release Tuesday.

Authorities say a 43-year-old man of Lemon Grove was driving a 2008 Ford Ranger with his passenger, a 44-year-old man, when the vehicle navigated a right curve and veered off the wet roadway for unknown reasons.

The Ford then struck a wooden post, causing the vehicle to overturn down a dirt embankment, according to law enforcement.

First responders were able to remove the driver and take him to the hospital with minor injuries, while the passenger of the Ford, who was wearing a seatbelt, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities do not suspect driving under the influence to be a factor in the crash.

“Speeding and unsafe turns continue to be leading causes of crashes on our roadways, especially during inclement weather,” said Cpt. Monteagudo. “I urge all drivers to slow down, obey posted speed limits, approach every turn with caution and be extra careful during inclement weather. Let’s work together to keep our roads safe; for you, your loved ones, and everyone sharing the road.”

The crash is under investigation.
