Channing Tatum Makes Rare Comment on “Painful” Jenna Dewan Divorce

For Channing Tatum, not everything is magic.

Indeed, the actor shared that he’s had to put in hard work to gain and lose weight for a variety of roles—most recently an intense weight loss for his upcoming film Roofman. And for the 45-year-old, the extreme physical changes have taken a toll on his mental health.

“I had only planned to get down to 185. And then, just once, I was already going, and just the days of shooting, it kept coming off, and I got down to like 172,” he said in an interview with Variety published Sept. 2, noting that when assistant director Mariela Comitini voiced her concern on set, he had an epiphany: “I was like, ‘I think you’re right. This is weird.'”

For the Magic Mike star, the weight loss went hand in hand with a decline in his mental wellbeing, which was an unexpected side effect of his physical transformation.

“It was a sort of emptiness and a sadness to it,” Channing shared. “I would just see myself, and I would seem hollow. And the movie, a lot for me, was a lot on loneliness, and a real meditation for that wanting to be full and trying to fill an empty vessel.”

He added, “That empty feelings sucks after a little while.”

However, Channing believes it improved his portrayal of fugitive Jeffrey Manchester, a former United States Army Reserve officer, in the film, with the 21 Jump Street actor saying his lived experience helped him in his art.

“I’ve lived six or seven different lives,” he told Variety. “Life gives you fuel. If you’ve really been heartbroken, and really been in pain, and felt real, true aloneness … I’ve experienced enough life that I have something to offer. The technique, and the ability to actually deliver.”
