NATIONAL CITY, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI) — The National City Police Department announced it will conduct a driving under the influence, or DUI, checkpoint in the South Bay this weekend. It’s scheduled for 6 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 1, on the 2900 block of Highland Avenue.

According to police, the checkpoint location was selected based on local collision data and the frequency of DUI-related arrests. Officers will be screening drivers for signs of alcohol or drug impairment, as well as verifying valid driver’s licenses.

Department officials emphasized that checkpoints and patrols serve as a strong deterrent against impaired driving, stating that research shows well-publicized DUI operations can reduce crashes involving impaired drivers by as much as 20%.

Police provided the following reminders to help keep the community safe:

  • Always plan for a sober ride home, whether that’s a designated driver, ride-share, taxi, or public transit.
  • If you see someone who appears impaired, take their keys and help them arrange a safe way home.
  • Report suspected drunk drivers by calling 911.
  • If you’re hosting a party, provide nonalcoholic options and ensure guests have a safe way to leave.

Authorities also warned that the cost of a DUI can be steep — upwards to of $13,500 in fines, fees, classes, license suspension, and other expenses — not to mention potential jail time.

Police did not provide an end time for Saturday’s checkpoint.
