SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — A pedestrian was hit and killed by a vehicle Monday on Interstate 5 near the Camp Pendleton area.

The incident occurred Monday around 12:23 a.m. on northbound I-5, located south of Basilone Road, the California Highway Patrol said in a news release.

When authorities arrived on scene, they pronounced the pedestrian dead.

The pedestrian crossed the northbound lanes and entered the southbound lanes when a driver, identified as a 21-year-old man of Fontana, CA, in a Ford Mustang struck the pedestrian while in the No. 1 southbound lane, according to authorities.

Investigators don’t believe driving under the influence was a factor for the driver, while they haven’t determined whether alcohol or drugs played a role for the pedestrian.

Anyone with information about the crash should contact Officer J. Grieshaber at 858-944-6300.
