SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — A horse is dead after sustaining a serious injury during a race on Saturday at the Del Mar Racetrack.

The Del Mar Racetrack confirmed racehorse General Jackson was humanely euthanized after suffering from a catastrophic injury to his right front fetlock (the joint on the horse’s foreleg).

General Jackson fell during the second race at Del Mar Racetrack on Saturday, marking the second horse death of the 2025 season at Del Mar following the early August death of Uncrowned King. In July, a jockey was seriously injured after falling from his horse during a race.

The official race chart states General Jackson “attended the pace three deep between rivals, chased in the three path still between runners around the bend, sustained an injury inside the sixteenth pole and unseated the rider just before the wire, then was transported off the track via equine ambulance.”

General Jackson only raced once in 2024 and several times in 2025, coming in first in Santa Anita in April.

Del Mar said in its statement, “Our deepest sympathies to everyone who cared for him.”

Four horses died at Del Mar in 2024, according to the California Horse Racing Board’s list of equine fatalities.

Del Mar Racetrack’s summer season runs through September 7.
