‘A Car Isn’t a Time Machine,’ karanoah’s New Song Makes It Feel Like One

You can’t go back to the past. But if you drive down an old road in the rain, past the town you grew up in – for a moment you almost do.

That feeling is the starting point for karanoah’s “会いに Aini”. It’s the three-piece’s first straight-ahead rock song in a while, written as the radio CM song for Osaka station FM802’s “SATURDAY AMUSIC ISLANDS ~SOFT99 CAR LIFE WITH YOU~”.

The song is built from small things: heavy rain, fogged-up car windows, the glow of a vending machine, a CD played from the passenger seat of his sister’s car. Taken one at a time they’re ordinary fragments of memory, and together they work like a brief return to that time. However long ago it was, those memories stay attached to smells and scenery. Still feeling empty and still searching, karanoah’s Yudai carries all of it and keeps moving forward.

It starts quietly, with space around the intro and a voice that sounds like someone telling a story. As the tension builds, the chorus opens the full band sound at once, with a rhythm that pushes forward and a stretching melody behind it, and the urge to go and meet someone in spite of the rain. By the end it picks up speed like a driver pressing the accelerator on a wet night road, eyes only on the destination. The line that opens the song as a murmured suggestion to go and see someone has become a promise by the last chorus.

Who he’s going to meet is never clearly answered. It could be someone from his memories or the person he was on that day. What waits at the end of the rain-soaked run is the person he is now, carrying the past, the future, the doubts and the scars.

Yudai explained where the idea came from: “A car feels like a time machine. Of course you can’t actually go back, but it can feel like you really have. Driving through your hometown, the town you lived in, a road full of memories, you remember feelings from back then that you hadn’t even remembered, the scenery, even the smell. It feels like you can go back to that moment, just for a second. I wanted to make a song that takes all of it, the emotions and the memories, and moves forward.”

“会いに Aini” has been on air as the radio CM song on FM802’s “SATURDAY AMUSIC ISLANDS ~SOFT99 CAR LIFE WITH YOU~” since 10 October. The same day, karanoah played it live for the first time at “Maxell presents FM802 MINAMI WHEEL 2026”, on stage at OSAKA MUSE from 17:00.

The title also names the band’s next move. “KARANOAH pre. Log Book Tour 2027 ‘会いに’” starts in January, taking the band to places they haven’t been able to reach until now, and so literally going to meet people. It starts on 15 January in Osaka, goes on to Fukuoka and Hokkaido, and finishes in Tokyo on 20 February. Guest artists will join the Osaka, Fukuoka and Hokkaido shows, while Tokyo will be a one-man show.

A song that begins as a murmur and ends as a promise, followed by a tour that keeps it.
