Harper Avenue Apartments rises in West Hollywood

Designed by Zoltan E. Pali, FAIA, founder of SPF:architects, Harper Avenue Apartments reconsiders multifamily housing on a constrained urban site in West Hollywood. Located one block south of Sunset Boulevard, the four-story residential development replaces an earlier proposal that did not fully utilize the site’s development potential. The revised scheme increases the project from 14 to 17 two-bedroom apartments, each averaging approximately 1,400 sqft, while meeting local planning, zoning, and parking requirements.

higher-density housing turns into open-air living

The design by SPF:architects studio organizes higher residential density around a series of open spaces that improve daylight, ventilation, and spatial quality. A raised front courtyard and a central open-air courtyard introduce light into the interior of the building, while corner-unit layouts increase access to natural light and provide greater separation between residences. Outdoor living areas, including private decks, patios, and rooftop terraces, extend the apartments beyond their interior footprint. Ground-floor units are accessed through individual entrances and paired with on-grade parking, giving these residences a spatial organization more commonly associated with detached housing.

The building’s exterior is defined by a bronze corrugated metal facade whose folded surfaces correspond to the internal arrangement of the apartments. Variations in the facade articulate the building’s program while reducing the perceived scale of the overall volume. Changes in depth, texture, and shadow create distinct elevations that respond to the surrounding residential context, expressing the relationship between the building’s interior organization and its external form.
