How Bruce Springsteen, Patti Scialfa’s Marriage Inspired Jeremy Allen White’s Biopic Performance

Bruce Springsteen and Patti Scialfa are hopeful amid her remission from cancer.

The “Born in the USA” singer shared an update that Scialfa—his wife of 35 years and guitarist in the E Street Band—is now in remission after battling blood cancer since 2018.

“As you know, Patti’s been living with her multiple myeloma for over eight years,” Springsteen noted in a pre-tape played at the 47th annual PMC fundraiser Aug. 1, as captured by fan footage. “Now, thankfully, she is in remission.”

Scialfa, 73, publicly disclosed her experience with the blood disease (in which cancerous plasma cells impact the blood marrow, per the Mayo Clinic) through their 2024 documentary Road Diary: Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band.

And now that she’s in remission, Springsteen, 76, expressed gratitude for the healthcare heroes who were at the Aug. 1 charity event, which benefited the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

“Like millions of families facing cancer, we’ve learned what every patient learns. Hope has a face,” Springsteen said. “It’s our physician who refuses to stop searching and caring. It’s our nurse who sits beside us when we’re scared and always makes our journey a little bit easier.”

The dedication of cancer-treating organizations has shown Springsteen firsthand how important it is for these institutions to exist.

“Patti’s journey has taught us something I hope every one of us and every American can understand,” the River artist explained. “Medical research isn’t an idea. It isn’t politics. It isn’t a line in a budget. It’s the reason families find hope when hope seems hardest to find.”

Scialfa (born Vivienne Patricia Scialfa) and Springsteen have been together since touring the world as a musical act in 1984. After starting a romantic relationship in 1988 and getting married in 1991, the Jersey natives later became parents to kids Evan, 36, Jessica, 34 and Samuel, 32.

As such, it’s no surprise Springsteen emphasized his passion for the care that made his longtime partner’s recovery possible at the annual benefit.

As he put it, “When we lose sight of that, we lose sight of one another, and that’s too high a price for anyone to pay.”
