Why OFWs Instantly Feel Safe When They Meet Another Filipino Abroad

Why OFWs Instantly Feel Safe When They Meet Another Filipino Abroad thumbnail

The Unspoken Comfort of Seeing “Kabayan” in a Foreign Land There is a very strange feeling many OFWs experience abroad. Imagine walking alone in: a cold European train station, a crowded Middle Eastern airport, a quiet street in Canada, or an unfamiliar city where nobody speaks your language.

    Everything feels foreign.

    The signs.
    The people.
    The weather.
    The food.
    Even the silence feels different.

Then suddenly… You hear: “Pinoy ka?” (Are you Filipino?) And somehow, instantly… your fear becomes smaller. Your shoulders relax. Your heart softens a little. Because for many OFWs, meeting another Filipino abroad feels like finding a small piece of home while accidentally walking in a foreign country.

    1. Because Another Filipino Understands Your Sacrifice Without Explanation

This is perhaps the deepest reason. OFWs rarely need long explanations with each other. The moment they discover both are Filipinos abroad, they already understand:

    • homesickness,
    • family sacrifice,
    • loneliness,
    • pressure,
    • missing birthdays,
    • missing funerals,
    • missing children,
    • and pretending to be strong every day.

There is a silent understanding immediately. No need for dramatic speeches. Because another OFW already knows the emotional price of leaving home.

    2. The Filipino Smile Feels Different Abroad

Very realistic. When foreigners smile politely, it feels nice. But when another Filipino smiles abroad… it feels warm. Familiar. Safe. Maybe because Filipinos naturally smile with emotion.

Not only with lips. But with eyes, tone, humor, and concern. Especially abroad where many OFWs feel emotionally isolated, that warmth becomes incredibly powerful.

    3. Filipinos Abroad Instantly Worry About Each Other

This is true. A Filipino stranger abroad will often ask: “Kumain ka na?” (Have you eaten already?)

“Saan ka work?” (Where do you work?) “Okay employer mo?”(Is your employer okay?)

These may sound like simple questions. But hidden inside them is genuine concern. Because every Filipino abroad secretly knows: life abroad can become emotionally difficult very quickly.

    4. Because Filipinos Carry “Home” in Their Behavior

OFWs often say this without realizing it: another Filipino smells like home.  Not literally. But emotionally. The humor feels familiar. The laughter sounds familiar. The respect feels familiar. The way food is shared feels familiar.

    Even simple things:

    • hearing Tagalog,
    • hearing “opo,”
    • hearing loud Filipino laughter,
    • Hearing karaoke from another apartment can suddenly reduce homesickness dramatically.

    5. They Feel Less Invisible

One painful reality abroad is this: many OFWs spend long periods feeling invisible. They work quietly. Move quietly. Survive quietly.

    Especially in countries where:

    • they are minorities,
    • language is difficult,
    • or culture feels distant.

Then suddenly, another Filipino sees them not just as a worker, but as a fellow human being. A kabayan. And that recognition feels emotionally powerful.

    6. Because Filipinos Abroad Become Softer With Each Other

Very realistic. Back in the Philippines, people may:

    • argue politically,
    • tease regional accents,
    • compare status,
    • or judge social class.

But abroad? Most of those things slowly disappear. Because survival abroad humbles people. The OFW engineer, caregiver, domestic worker, nurse, waiter, and factory worker suddenly sit together eating pancit like siblings. Why? Because loneliness abroad removes many unnecessary walls.

    7. The First Filipino Friend Abroad Often Becomes Unforgettable

    Many OFWs never forget:

    • the first Filipino who guided them,
    • translated for them,
    • accompanied them,
    • explained transportation,
    • shared food,
    • or simply listened during difficult nights.

Because in moments of emotional vulnerability, kindness becomes unforgettable. Especially in a foreign country.

    8. Filipinos Naturally Build Emotional Communities Abroad

This is one reason Filipinos are admired globally. Even far from home, Filipinos somehow recreate:

    • family atmosphere,
    • celebrations,
    • church gatherings,
    • potlucks,
    • karaoke nights,
    • birthday parties,
    • and emotional support systems.

A tiny Filipino gathering abroad can suddenly feel like an entire barangay reunion.

    9. Because Deep Inside, OFWs Are All Carrying the Same Fear

No matter the profession or country, many OFWs quietly carry similar fears:

    • fear of failure,
    • fear of loneliness,
    • fear of disappointing family,
    • fear of getting sick alone,
    • fear of not surviving emotionally abroad.

And when they meet another Filipino, they instinctively feel: “This person probably understands.” That feeling creates instant emotional safety.

    10. The Most Beautiful Thing About Filipinos Abroad

Perhaps one of the greatest strengths of Filipinos is this: they know how to make people feel less alone. Even in foreign countries. Even among strangers. Even while carrying their own burdens too. And maybe that is why many OFWs survive life abroad not only because of hard work but because somewhere in another city, another Filipino is always willing to say:

“Kabayan… tara kain.” (Kabayan… come eat with us.)

And sometimes, in a lonely foreign country… those simple words become more comforting than people realize.
