Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr took a trip down the long and winding road back to their roots for their first duet.

Paul shared how he recently reunited with his former Beatles bandmate to create a duet for his new album, The Boys of Dungeon Lane, explaining how they teamed up with producer Andrew Watt to make the track “Home to Us,” which is about their shared experience growing up in Liverpool.

“I saw Ringo and said I worked with this guy Andrew,” the 83-year-old explained at his album listening party in Los Angeles on April 16, per Billboard. “Ringo came over to Andrew’s studio and played a little bit of drums.”

It was at that point, Paul said, that there was a miscommunication that almost derailed the experience. Andrew didn’t think Ringo had provided enough drumming material to make the full song, leaving Ringo “a little pissed,” according to Paul. Then, the situation appeared to get even more confusing after Paul sent the demo to the drummer to record vocals, but Ringo only sang on the chorus, which made Paul assume that Ringo didn’t like the song.

Fortunately, the pair worked out the misunderstanding, with Ringo returning to add more drums. The result? Their first-ever collaboration, and a heartfelt tribute to their hometown.

“Even though where we lived was a little rough,” Paul said of the track. “It was home to us.”

And not only does “Home to Us” mark the first time the musicians teamed up for a duet, but it also signifies another milestone for Ringo.

During his album listening party, Paul told the audience with a laugh, “Ringo’s never done a duet with one of the Beatles.”

Ringo himself also highlighted the significance of the duet and shared his praise over the song.

“Paul got the song and then put everything else on it. So it was like in reverse—the drums were on first,” he explained during the April 20 episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live. “But it’s really great. It’s amusing, and it’s very real, ’cause that’s where we come from.”

The Boys of Dungeon Lane—Paul’s 21st solo studio album—is out May 29.
