Dezeen Showroom: Japanese architecture studio and furniture maker Mililab has given both versatility and presence to its Ishi stool, informed by a previous design for table legs.

Made of solid American oak wood finished in a charcoal stain, the Ishi stool sprung from the development of the Maru dining table, during which time Mililab founders Livert Lim and Mengfei Wu kept finding their attention drawn away from the tabletop and to the legs.

The Ishi stool has a monolithic yet soft form

“Their profile – a continuous inward-tapering curve – had a presence that felt independent,” said Mililab. “A shape that didn’t need the table above it. So it was pulled apart and let to stand alone.”

Working with collaborator Djordje Cebic, they designed Ishi to have a similar form, both monolithic and soft, like a river-worn pebble with a pleasing curve.

When inverted, the cushion becomes a flat tabletop

This form encompasses both base and upholstered seat as one integrated whole, but contrary to the visually seamless apperance, the cushion is removable and invertible, allowing the stool to double as a side table with a flat oak top.

Mililab also considered practicality with the seat height, which at 430 millimetres pairs well with a dining table, hotel lobby sofa or a vanity desk.
