Eric Dane’s Girlfriend Janell Shirtcliff Shares Touching Tribute After His Death

It’s a beautiful day for Katherine Heigl to remember the life of Eric Dane.

The actress—who costarred alongside Eric on ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy—shared a powerful message about grief days after the Euphoria actor died following a yearlong battle with ALS (Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis).

“I debated this post for days,” Katherine wrote in a Feb. 22 Instagram post. “I have never been comfortable grieving publicly. I share my tears, my stories and my memories with those I’m closest to and more times than not I share them only with the heavens alone. But that silence can often look like a lack of care which I could not abide here.”

She also offered a few kind words to Eric’s family, including his estranged wife Rebecca Gayheart—who shared kids Billie, 15, and Georgia, 14, with the Burlesque actor.

“Rebecca, Billie, Georgia…There is so little, if in fact anything, one can say about a tragic loss like yours,” she continued. “All the ‘I’m sorries’ and ‘my prayers are with you’ ring a bit hollow in the midst of so much pain and grief. So I will say the only thing that has ever brought me peace when I’ve lost someone I love. It is Robert Frost’s poem.”

Katherine, 47, went on to quote the famed poet’s “Nothing Gold Can Stay,” which the Firefly Lane star noted she has as a tattoo of in her parents’ handwriting.

“‘Natures first green is gold, her hardest hue to hold,’” she wrote. “‘Her early leaf’s a flower; but only so an hour. Then leaf subsides to leaf. So Eden sank to grief, so Dawn goes down to day. Nothing gold can stay.’”

“I will never forget Eric’s gold and I will forever be grateful I got to bask in it for even a brief moment in time,” she added. “Thank you for sharing him with us. God Speed my old friend…here’s to your next great adventure.”

The Suits actress’ tribute comes after her Grey’s costar Chyler Leigh reacted to the news of Eric’s Feb. 19 death.

“The last 48 hours have been devastating,” Chyler said in a statement to E! News. “I never thought I would be using the term ‘had or was,’ but here we are. And I hate it.”

“Eric had a heart of gold,” she continued. “His humor and, especially, his laugh was infectious. He was a deeply intelligent man who could carry a philosophical conversation for hours even while we were on set. He was an amazing father and loved his girls FIERCELY. Incredibly passionate about his work and the causes he kept close to his heart.”

And his legacy will continue to live on.

“The Universe is undoubtedly holding Eric now,” she continued, “just as I will continue to do within my heart forever.”

When I came to set that day, he said, we’re breaking the rules and hugging now right?
What I will remember most about Eric Dane are his hugs. The best hugs. Oh my friend. I wish you peace.”
