POWAY, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI) — Tony Blain, the embattled Poway councilmember who was the subject of Tuesday’s recall election, has resigned from his position.
The Poway City Council was notified of Blain’s resignation, effective immediately, on Wednesday.
The city council will host a special meeting at 11 a.m. on Friday to discuss the process for moving forward.
According to Poway’s new policy, which was approved in April, the city will need to hold a special election to fill his vacancy since it occurred within the first 18 months of his four-year term. It will give Poway District 2 voters a chance to select their next councilmember.
Blain was elected last November to represent residents in District 2. However, he has faced several hurdles since taking office, including being placed on the ballot for the November special election calling for his removal from his position.
His resignation came after 80% of Poway voters voted “yes” for his recall, with just under 20% voting for him to continue in office.
Leading up to Election Day, Blain was also charged with four felonies, including perjury, asking for a bribe, soliciting a bribe, petty theft and destruction and removal of public papers.
He was scheduled to be arraigned on Monday, the day before the election, but did not appear in court. The arraignment has been postponed until January.
