SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — A driver was killed in a crash Tuesday morning on State Route 163.

The crash occurred around 2:19 a.m. on SR-163 southbound, located just north of Friars Road, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Authorities say a collision involving a BMW caused the driver to be ejected from the vehicle and the passenger to become trapped as the vehicle erupted into flames.

A CHP unit witnessed the crash while driving and turned around to help the occupants of the BMW.

Both the passenger, who was taken out of the vehicle, and the driver were transported to the hospital.

The driver died due to his injuries, while the passenger is in unknown condition, per CHP.
