SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — The San Diego County Department of Animal Services executed a search warrant Friday at a ranch on Artesian Road in North County, local officials confirmed. A team of officers and veterinarians conducted a welfare check on the animals.

Two underweight horses were seized as part of an animal neglect investigation that began after the death of a horse named Penny last month. According to officials, the horses were found in poor condition and were taken from the property to receive proper care and further evaluation.

Personnel on site included Animal Services Director Vaughn Maurice, Assistant Director Rachael Borrelli, Animal Control Lt. Lewis Peterson, veterinarian Dr. Caitlin Manring, and two deputies from the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department.

“Our animal care officers are committed to serving the County of San Diego for animal rescues, relinquishment, and animal cruelty or neglect investigations in the unincorporated areas of San Diego County,” said Dr. Maurice.

Officials have not confirmed whether charges will be filed, but the investigation remains active. The agency emphasized its role in protecting animals across the region, including through rescue operations and cruelty investigations.

San Diego County Animal Services operates two shelters, helping place thousands of animals into new homes each year.
