Driver suspected of DUI arrested, passenger dead in SR-54 crash thumbnail

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — A driver was arrested and a passenger died in a suspected driving under the influence (DUI) crash Wednesday on State Route 54.

The incident occurred around 12:54 a.m. on SR-54 eastbound, located east of Highland Avenue, the California Highway Patrol said in a news release.

Authorities say a 20-year-old man was driving a white Nissan with a 21-year-old passenger when for unknown reasons the vehicle veered off the road into a reverse gore point, struck a stationary sign and traveled down a dirt embankment.

The 21-year-old woman was taken to the hospital where she died from her injuries, per CHP.

The driver was arrested on suspicion of DUI.
