SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department is actively recruiting, and it’s not just for sworn officers.
Sheriff Kelly Martinez joined KUSI’s Jason Austell over the weekend to discuss the wide range of job opportunities currently available, as well as the many benefits that come with a career in law enforcement and public service.
“We have about 100 positions available right now,” said Sheriff Martinez. “We’re looking to fill about 200 detention deputy positions and approximately 34 dispatch positions. But beyond that, we have around 166 different job classifications—everything from nurses to food service workers.”
A career with the Sheriff’s Department offers long-term growth potential, even for those starting in entry-level roles.
“There are so many job opportunities throughout the department. You don’t need to be a sworn officer,” she said. “You can have an entry-level position and continue to move up—it’s a career. I’ve been doing this for 40 years.”
When asked what kind of people the department is looking to hire, Sheriff Martinez emphasized a commitment to service:
“We want people with a strong work ethic, who want to give back to the community and who value public service,” she explained. “That’s one thing we hear a lot—people who go home from their current jobs and think, ‘what have I done for my community today?’ And then they look at us and realize, I could really have value and give back.”
