With a press of its small button, TOBI offers a single line about whatever might be coming next. Industrial designer YuJung Jung conceived the keyring-sized electronic device around the familiar appeal of horoscopes and tarot readings, pulling that experience away from the phone and giving it a dedicated physical form. Each message arrives at random, so the interaction sits somewhere between prediction and chance, with enough ambiguity for the words to occasionally feel strangely well timed.

Unlike a phone, which can lead from a horoscope into another app and another scroll, this little screen has a much shorter conversation in mind. Turn it on by holding the button at the upper right for two seconds and the device greets its owner during the boot sequence. An encouraging fortune follows. From there, pressing the button calls up another one-line message whenever curiosity strikes.

a ‘cyber friend’ with very little to say

Jung describes the design concept as a ‘cyber friend,’ which helps explain why TOBI feels closer to a character than a miniature piece of generic electronics. The display occupies much of the front face, framed by a compact matte body with the controls pushed toward its edge. Jung developed the proportions through repeated sketches, adjusting the relationship between screen and casing as well as the composition of the front face until the device landed somewhere between electronic tool and small companion.

Available in green and blue, the tiny object uses polycarbonate with a matte coating. Its scale makes the keyring format feel integral to the idea. TOBI can hang beside keys or clip onto a bag, leaving the fortune mechanism within reach without asking for its own pocket. The familiar metal ring also pulls the screen into the territory of charms and trinkets, objects people have long carried for luck, attachment, or simple amusement.

one screen, one sentence

TOBI has a screen, yet there is no feed to navigate and little reason to stare at it for long. One press produces one sentence. The interaction can end a few seconds later, leaving the message to linger on its own terms rather than opening into more content. That makes the device feel unusually finite for a digital object.

There is also something fitting about shrinking fortune telling down to an accessory that travels among the ordinary contents of a pocket or bag. Predictive content already depends on a small act of willingness: opening the horoscope, drawing the tarot card, seeing whether an arbitrary sentence seems to fit the moment. Jung gives that impulse its own piece of hardware. While TOBI has no grand claim about seeing the future, it makes checking a fortune as easy as reaching for your keys.
