San Francisco 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan is on the mend after a tragic accident.
The NFL team announced that its head coach was injured in a car accident amid the league’s summer break and will participate in training camp in a limited capacity during his recovery.
“San Francisco 49ers Head Coach Kyle Shanahan was involved in a car accident last week where he suffered non-life-threatening injuries,” the 49ers shared in a statement on the team’s social media channels July 25. “Coach Shanahan will participate in team activities on a limited basis at the start of training camp while he recovers. Coach Shanahan and the 49ers organization would like to sincerely thank all first responders involved for their efforts and care.”
On July 14, Shanahan—who has been the head coach of the 49ers since 2017—crashed into an SUV near his home in northern California, suffering a concussion, breaking his nose, multiple ribs and his hand, according to multiple outlets, citing sources close to the situation. The 46-year-old also reportedly required 40 stitches in his face.
Shanahan was transported to a local hospital, before he was discharged later that day, according to Palo Alto Lt. Nicholas Martinez, per CNN.
Additionally, Martinez noted that drugs and alcohol were not a factor in the collision.
While he added that neither Shanahan nor the other driver was cited for the accident and they both cooperated with police, he didn’t disclose any further details about the crash.
“Consistent with our standard release of information procedures in such cases,” Martinez shared, “we do not release information regarding the cause of the collision, or which party may have been at fault.”

As Shanahan recovers at home, assistant head coach Chris Foerster and other team coordinators “will handle head coach responsibilities,” the 49ers noted in its statement.
The football team’s upcoming season will mark Shanahan’s 10th overall. During his years as head coach, he’s led the Niners to two trips to the Super Bowl in 2019 and 2023.
The team announced the news of Shanahan’s accident on the first day of training camp. The 49ers’ first game, against the Los Angeles Rams, will take place on Sept. 10 in Melbourne, Australia.
