Dezeen Showroom: Dutch sustainability platform Front and biotechnology company Biomason have launched a low-carbon, concrete-like floor tile strengthened by bacteria.
Front believes Mimmik is the first bacteria-grown tile to be industrially produced, making a sustainable technology available to a wide market of specifiers looking to reduce the carbon footprint of their commercial projects.
The tiles reduce carbon emissions by at least 60 per cent compared to traditional cement, according to the brand, targeting what is famously one of the world’s key single sources of carbon emissions.
The tiles are made using Biomason‘s Zymecrete technology, in which bacteria “grow” a strong and durable marble material by binding carbon and calcium through their natural biological processes.
According to Biomason, Mimmik performs like any other high-quality tile and has a similar feel and appearance to concrete.
The clear nature of the Zymecrete binder allows the colour of the aggregates to show through, creating an opportunity for enhanced connection to nature and the celebration of local geology.
