Shakira Makes Rare Comment About “Darkest Moment” of Gerard Piqué Breakup
Shakira is ready to talk about her breakup from Gerard Piqué whenever, wherever.
The “Whenever, Wherever” singer—who shares kids Milan, 13, and Sasha, 11, with the retired professional soccer player—opened up about the pair’s 2022 split following 11 years together.
At the time, Shakira, 49, shared she was living through “the darkest moment—when I saw the dissolution of my family,” she told The Times in an interview published May 22, “the family that I had dreamt to keep forever.”
While coping with the breakup, the Grammy winner was also supporting her father, according to the outlet, who suffered a severe fall shortly after flying to Barcelona to be by his daughter’s side following the split.
“I’ve been through so much pain, but it has made me perhaps in an unforeseen way a wiser person—or stronger, at least,” Shakira (born Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll) explained. “They say that what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger and it is true. It’s amazing to learn that humans have a resilience that we can resort to at any moment in our lives.”
“Sometimes through hardships and through pain is how we discover how strong we can be,” she added. “Suffering sometimes makes you a better person, makes you value friends and support.”
Some of those friends who stepped up included Chris Martin and Adele. Chris, for his part, sent the “Hips Don’t Lie” singer a photo of a broken vase glued together with gold, per the outlet, which read on it, “Kintsugi—you’re going to be so much stronger once this is over.”

“Life sometimes can be a b–ch, but it’s also beautiful and made of light and shadows,” Shakira said. “So I thank life for every single moment, the bright ones and the dark ones, the people who have made me suffer because they have become my masters who have taught me lessons, very valuable lessons.”
As for how she feels about her ex four years after their breakup?
“I will always have that gratitude in my heart for the father of my kids,” she said, “and [for] turning me into the mother that I am today.”
Shakira also shared an update on her love life.
“No romance for me for now,” she said. “There’s no space or time in my life for that. My plate is quite full.”
“My kids are my priority,” she added. “And my career. Strangely enough, I’m in love with my career like I’ve never been in my life. I’m enjoying my time alone as well.”
