What NASCAR’s Kyle Busch Shared About His Health Before His Death at 41
Kyle Busch often tried to pace himself when it came to his health.
While the NASCAR driver died on May 21 at the age of 41 from an undisclosed illness, he was candid about his health issues as he wanted to stay in top form as one of racing’s most celebrated drivers.
Shortly before his death, Kyle’s family—including wife Samantha Busch and children Brexton, 11, and Lennix, 4—had shared that he had been hospitalized with “a severe illness.”
“He is currently undergoing treatment,” the May 21 statement posted to his social media continued, “and will not compete in any of his scheduled activities this weekend at Charlotte Motor Speedway. We ask for understanding and privacy as our family navigates this situation.”
The two-time Cup Series had also needed medical attention just days before as he’d asked for a doctor to meet him after his race at Watkins Glen International on May 10.
“Can somebody try to find Bill Heisel? He’s the kindred doctor guy,” Kyle was heard saying in a radio transmission shared on X by FOX: NASCAR. “Tell him I need him after the race, please.”
Kyle—who was dealing with a sinus cold during the race—added, “I’m gonna need a shot.”
The driver did not share what kind of shot he needed from his doctor at the time.

Earlier this year, Kyle was hospitalized after severely cutting his leg when a stool he was standing on broke.
As he recalled on his wife’s podcast Certified Oversharer in March, “I land on my feet and I’m holding on the walls, like, ‘I’m good, everything’s fine, I’m alright.’”
But within moments his son Brexton had pointed out that his dad was very much not good as his leg was heavily bleeding.
“As soon as he said ‘you’re bleeding,’ I look down and I look and it’s not like you’re bleeding like a nosebleed,” Kyle said. “It is like pouring. You’re gushing.”
Thankfully, the deep cut—which needed 24 stitches—didn’t hinder his plans to compete in the 2026 Cook Out Clash at the Bowman Gray Stadium in February.

Unfortunately the same could not be said about his injuries in 2015 when he sustained a compound leg fracture and broken foot during a crash, causing him to miss 11 races that season. And while he was disappointed to sit out, he was thankful that the injury wasn’t worse—especially as it occurred shortly before his son Brexton was born.
“I could have had a serious neck or head injury or even worse,” he told ESPN in 2015. “To us, we pray to God and thankful for it, that I’m still here and actually able to be part of the birth of our son.”
And Kyle was especially grateful to have Samantha by his side during his recovery.
“Samantha and I share a lot of respect and love for one another, but I don’t think anything has come as close as this experience that we’ve had to deal with, with her being there by my side and helping me,” he said. “It’s been awesome to have her, just her helping me.”
