More details surrounding Donald Gibb’s final days are coming to light.
One day after the Revenge of the Nerds star’s family confirmed his death at the age of 71, his son Travis Gibb told TMZ that his dad was battling throat cancer and had suffered a heart attack before he died.
However, despite Donald’s heart attack occurring in the weeks before his death, Travis attributed his cause of death to cancer.
Travis previously told the outlet that Donald died at his home in Texas surrounded by family.
Donald first rose to fame in 1984, playing in Revenge of the Nerds alongside Timothy Busfield and the late Robert Carradine. His tall stature and muscular physique quickly landed him more tough-guy roles, including 1987’s Revenge of the Nerds II: Nerds in Paradise and 1988’s Bloodsport with Jean-Claude Van Damme.
Following the news of Donald’s death, Jean-Claude paid tribute to his former castmate, sharing a picture of the pair on his Instagram Story with the caption, “Rest in peace, my brother.”
Meanwhile, Donald’s kids detailed their “heavy hearts” after the passing of their “beloved father.”
“Donald loved the Lord, his family, his friends, and his fans with all his heart,” they shared in a statement to People May 12. “Known for his larger-than-life presence on screen and his kindness off screen, he brought joy, laughter, and unforgettable memories to countless people throughout his life and career.”

Donald’s family noted that the actor “treasured his faith and the people he loved.”
“His strength, generosity, and spirit will never be forgotten by those who had the privilege of knowing him personally and by the many fans whose lives he touched over the years,” they continued. “We ask for prayers and privacy for the family during this difficult time while celebrating a life well lived and a legacy that will continue on forever.”
Donald’s children added, “Our father will be deeply missed and forever remembered.”
