Anne Hathaway Reveals If Meryl Streep Went Method on ‘Devil Wears Prada 2’

Meryl Streep didn’t have to scream anyone’s name on the set of The Devil Wears Prada 2.

In fact, as costar Anne Hathaway revealed, Meryl decided not to use method acting this time around while playing Runway editor Miranda Priestly on the sequel to the 2006 film.

“On the first one, Meryl made a huge sacrifice because she loves the hang,” Anne exclusively shared with E! News Creator Cam host Erin Lim Rhodes at the April 20 New York City premiere of the film. “Meryl loves being by the camera truck. She loves just the conversations that happen, the laughs.”

But as the 43-year-old explained, while making the first film, Meryl felt like the cast “would just be a little sharper, stand a little taller” if they didn’t feel “so comfortable around her,” if she was more like the strict magazine boss on set.

“So, she gave up all of that socializing time that she loved so much,” Anne continued. “That way we would just feel that much more in our own characters.”

However, when it came time for the sequel, Meryl decided she did want to spend more time with her costars and gave up her method technique. As Anne recalled, Meryl told her costars—including Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci—“You guys can do it yourselves.”

As for Anne—who wore a red Louis Vuitton gown for the premiere—she explained that she tried to stay out of her head on set and not feel pressure to make a groundbreaking sequel following the first movie.

“I’m kind of through that time in my life,” she admitted. “I don’t really want to focus on that part. I just kind of accept it.”

“Of course, there’s pressure, of course there’s expectation, of course there’s these things,” the Oscar winner told E!. “But this is the team that did it the first time. I would have felt scared if I was with a different team.”

Plus, The Devil Wears Prada helped shine a light on “just how deeply and passionately people love fashion.”

“So many people have told me that they dreamed big for their lives because of these characters,” Anne shared. “It’s been overwhelming to see that that is as true in New York City as it is in Seoul, South Korea, as it is in Shanghai. It’s been overwhelming.”
