Why Derek Hough’s Wife Hayley Says Her Heart Is “Breaking” After Baby
Hayley Erbert is sharing the ups and downs of motherhood.
Three months after she and husband Derek Hough welcomed their first baby together—a daughter named Everley—the Dancing With the Stars alum detailed the wide-ranging emotions she has experienced since giving birth.
“Motherhood is even more complex and contradicting than I could have ever imagined,” Hayley wrote on Instagram April 10. “It feels like living in two places at once. Where joy and heartache can both be true, all of the time.”
She added, “My heart is constantly bursting open, while also breaking into a million pieces.”
Hayley—who tied the knot with Derek in 2023—also addressed Everley directly and emphasized that she is cherishing “every little bit” of her growth, while “quietly grieving the version of you that existed just moments before.”
“So excited for all the ‘firsts’ and the life ahead of you/us, yet wishing I could freeze time and never have any ‘lasts,’” the 31-year-old continued. “It’s the most beautiful contradiction. This pull between holding on and letting go, between wanting time to slow down and knowing it never will.”
Despite the tension between Hayley’s emotions, she made a promise to her daughter, who she called “my world.”
“If this is the dichotomy of motherhood, then I’ll try my best to meet it with open arms,” she shared. “Soaking in every little detail, every version of you, every fleeting moment we have together.”

Hayley concluded, “I love being your mom. I love you beyond, Everley. I have truly never felt a love like this.”
For his part, Derek leaned into his feelings, too, writing in the comments section alongside a heart and crying emoji, “My girls.”
Of course, the Dancing With the Stars judge isn’t just supporting Hayley on social media—he also encourages her at home.
“I tell her every day, ‘You’re amazing. You were meant for this. You’re such a great mom,’” he told E! News in February. “I’m even more in love with her. I’m just so in awe of her. It’s amazing.”
