Nicholas Brendon, ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ Actor, Dead at 54
The residents of Sunnydale are coming together in mourning.
The cast of Buffy the Vampire Slayer spoke out following the tragic death of Nicholas Brendon at age 54, mourning the actor who played Xander Harris on the show from 1997 to 2003.
“My Sweet Nicky, thank you for years of laughter, love and Dodgers,” Alyson Hannigan wrote on Instagram March 20. “I will think of you every time I see a rocking chair. I love you. RIP.”
Meanwhile, Emma Caulfield—who portrayed Xander’s on-and-off love interest Anya Jenkins—wrote in a since-deleted Instagram post, “Rest Nicky. Rest. I love you.”
“My heart is heavy,” she added on Instagram Stories, per a screenshot published by Deadline. “I can’t put into words just how this has hit me.”
In addition to Alyson and Emma, Brendon starred in the series alongside Sarah Michelle Gellar, Anthony Head, James Marsters and the late Michelle Trachtenberg, who died in February 2025 due to complications from diabetes.
Brendon had been battling his own health struggles at the time of his death, including a congenital heart defect and cauda equina syndrome, which is caused by nerve damage at the base of the spinal cord, per Cleveland Clinic.
The actor passed away his sleep of natural causes on March 20, according to his family.
“We are heartbroken to share the passing of our brother and son,” his family told The Hollywood Reporter. “While it’s no secret that Nicholas had struggles in the past, he was on medications and treatment to manage his diagnosis and he was optimistic about the future at the time of his passing.”

His loved ones went on to remember the Criminal Minds alum—who had been open about his experience battling depression, alcoholism and substance abuse—for being passionate, sensitive and creative.
“Most people know Nicky for his work as an actor and for the characters he brought to life over the years,” his family shared. “In recent years Nicky has found his passion in painting and art. Nicky loved to share his enthusiastic talent with his family, friends and fans.”
They added, “Those who truly knew him understood that his art was one of the purest reflections of who he was.”

On top of his interest in visual art, Brendon had a soft spot for the Buffy universe, saying in 2014 that the most rewarding part of his career was “getting to play Xander and be part of this world even now.”
“It was just a really great show people could identify with,” he told Pensacola News Journal at the time. “I think it’s also become really popular on Netflix and Hulu; people tell me now that they’re watching it on Netflix with their kids.”
And Brendon knew the fans resonated with Xander for a very special reason, adding, “He was the everyman—he didn’t have powers, he wasn’t a vampire. He’s easy to relate to because he’s just a guy trying to get through the day.”
