Jack Osbourne Details Dad Ozzy Osbourne’s Final Hours Before His “Surprise” Death
Jack Osbourne is looking back at Ozzy Osbourne’s final days.
Seven months after the Black Sabbath frontman died from a heart attack amid his battle with Parkinson’s, his son detailed why the musician’s death was “a surprise.”
“Obviously everyone knew he was sick,” Jack said on the March 4 episode of the Hate to Break it to Ya podcast. “But we weren’t expecting it to be as quick as it was.”
Indeed, the 40-year-old explained that Ozzy appeared to be fine in the days following his performance at Back to the Beginning, his final concert.
“Even the morning that he passed, it wasn’t anything dramatic at all,” he continued. “He was up, he was doing his thing, had some breakfast, and that was it.”
Though Jack and his family, which includes mom Sharon Osbourne and sister Kelly Osbourne, were not expecting Ozzy’s death, his son could tell that the rocker was preparing for the end of his life.
“I think he was done,” Jack explained, recalling a moment they shared after Ozzy’s final show on July 5. “I was putting him to bed, and he was brushing his teeth or whatever, and he was looking at himself in the mirror, and he goes, ‘I think I’m gonna cut my hair off.’ I’m, like, ‘Why?’ And he’s, like, ‘I’ve retired. I’m not a rock star anymore.’”

He added, “I think about that, and I’m, like, ‘Yeah, he was done. He was OK with his journey.’”
Meanwhile, Sharon has also shared what she remembers of her final day with Ozzy.
“He was up and down to the bathroom all night, and it was 4:30 a.m., and he said, ‘Wake up,’” she recalled through tears on a December episode of Piers Morgan Uncensored. “I said, ‘I’m already bloody awake, you’ve woken me up.’”
“He said, ‘Kiss me,’” she continued. “And then he said, ‘Hug me tight.’”
Reflecting on the exchange, which happened hours before Ozzy suffered a heart attack following a brief workout, Sharon added, “If only I’d have told him I loved him more. If only I’d have held him tighter.”

Ozzy, born John Michael Osbourne in Birmingham, England, in 1948, struggled with school early on. It was his passion for music that ultimately helped him move forward.
“I left school with a little more education than when I first started going,” he told The Associated Press in 2010. “Because of my dyslexia, I couldn’t learn. So, I was teased a lot by one of my sister about not bing able to read. It’s very shameful.”
“If it wasn’t for The Beatles turning me onto music in a big way, I don’t know what I would have done,” he continued. “Music has been the main thing that got me out of the area, the place I was born.”

Ozzy was happy to sink his teeth into a macabre photo shoot. He was fired from Black Sabbath the year before due to his struggles with alcohol and drug abuse.
“Money would be the alcohol and the drugs and I behaved badly,” he said in his documentary Biography: The Nine Lives of Ozzy Osbourne of that time. “That was one of the lowest points of my life.”

Ozzy—as a solo artist—took the stage at Madison Square Garden for his Diary of a Madman tour, just two days after he infamously bit into a dead bat that was thrown onto the stage, which he believed was fake.
“I just thought it was a rubber bat,” Ozzy said in the documentary, “and I just put it in my mouth and crunched down. I just f–king bit into it, you know, being the f–king clown that I am [and was like], ‘Oh no! It’s real.'”

“I never thought I’d make it this far,” he told Rolling Stone in 2018 while reflecting on his career. “I don’t understand why I’m alive still after the hell-raising days. I guess whoever the man is upstairs, if there even is one, wants me to stick around.”
