Why Kate Hudson Turned Down Kirsten Dunst’s Role in Spider-Man
If Kate Hudson wanted to be almost famous, she had to do it on her own.
Despite growing up with famous parents Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell, the How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days actress said that she and brother Oliver Hudson were not given any handouts.
“I’m being really honest with you, I grew up in L.A. where I saw kids coast by with parents who gave them everything,” Kate said on the Feb. 19 of the Happy Sad Confused podcast. “And I had the opposite parents.”
“We were clearly privileged kids,” the 46-year-old continued. “But I do think that my parents were so adamant about how none of it belonged to us, that we didn’t earn it, that in order to get a life [like the one] we were living, we had to earn it ourselves, that that would never be available to us unless we had the same kind of work ethic.”
But despite being surrounded by other kids whose parents helped them get ahead, Kate accepted her parents’ mindset and “really took that to heart.”
“I was like, ‘No, I will never rely on my parents,'” she recalled. “And that was my big thing, like, ‘I will never take a job because of them. I don’t want anybody knowing they’re my parents.’”
In fact, because making it on her own was “really, really important,” Kate—whose biological dad is musician Bill Hudson—was happy when people didn’t immediately associate her with Goldie and Kurt, adding, “When I first started, I was so happy my last name was Hudson.”

But while she made sure to chart her own path as an actress, the Almost Famous star recognizes that she was lucky to grow up around movie-making, even if her parents’ were “very strict about us being on set.”
“We either had to work, we had to do something to earn being on set or we had to really stay out of everybody’s way,” she explained, “but we couldn’t just hang around.”
However, Kate acknowledged, “This is where I see my privilege and my opportunity. I got to grow up immersed in what I see as the most magical industry on the planet. And I got to see it through a little girl’s eyes, watching everybody work to make it happen.”
Of course, Kate’s bond with Goldie has extended beyond the movie sets she visited as a child. Read on to look at some of their cutest mother-daughter moments.

A Unique Bond
“I’ve always had a really super open relationship with her,” Hudson told E! News in 2016. “I’ve never felt like I’ve had to hide anything from mom. If anything, she’s always been my confidante.”
Lean on Me
Sometimes the student becomes the teacher. Goldie reflected in an interview with E! News, “Kate has taught me a lot. She is in many ways tougher than I was with the kids… At the same time she is extremely truthful. I think it’s vitally important to take the truth as much as you don’t want it.”

Life Lessons
Reflecting on the lessons Goldie has imparted on her through the years, Kate told E! News at the 2018 SAG Awards, “I think one of the things my mom has taught me is to find compassion in everything that I do, kindness, and that family is everything. How we raise our children is the true legacy for everyone and everything. So everything we put our hearts into is really just for our family.”
Fond Memories
What was life like with Goldie and Kurt Russell as parents? As Hudson described, “It was one of those childhoods where you say, ‘Well, they must have done something right,’ because we’re all so close. My mom, as busy as she was, was a very present parent.”

Proud Daughter
At Goldie and Russell’s joint Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony in May 2017, their daughter gushed, Their real legacy is what they have instilled in us kids—our tribe—that they created that they so vehemently protect and defend, the relationship they fiercely refuse to lose sight of together, and the deep feeling of love and nurturing they reserve for the most important thing we have in this life: family.”
