‘Dawson’s Creek’ Star Busy Philipps Shares She’s “Deeply Hurting” After James Van Der Beek’s Death
Busy Philipps will forever open up her morning light for James Van Der Beek.
Shortly after the actor’s family shared he died on Feb. 11 at the age of 48 following a battle with colorectal cancer, his Dawson’s Creek costar expressed her grief over his passing.
“My heart is deeply hurting for all of us today,” Busy wrote on Instagram Feb. 11. “Every person who knew James and loved him, anyone who loved his work or had the pleasure of meeting him, all of his dear friends and community that surrounded him as he battled this illness, especially his parents and brother and sister.”
The 46-year-old wrote that she was “profoundly heartbroken for his incredible wife Kimberly and their six magical children,” adding that he was “one in a billion” and “will be forever missed.”
“I don’t know what else to say,” Busy continued. “I am just so so sad. He was my friend and I loved him and I’m so grateful for our friendship all these years.”
Busy joined the cast of Dawson’s Creek during season five of its six-season run, starring alongside James, Joshua Jackson, Katie Holmes and Michelle Williams from 2001 to 2003 (the series ran from 1998 to 2003). The group reunited in September for a special event to help raise money for the organization F Cancer after James shared his own diagnosis in 2023.

James’ wife Kimberly—with whom he shared children Olivia, 15, Joshua, 13, Annabel, 12, Emilia, 9, Gwendolyn, 7, and Jeremiah, 4—confirmed he had died in a Feb. 11 statement to Instagram, writing, “Our beloved James David Van Der Beek passed peacefully this morning. He met his final days with courage, faith, and grace.”
“There is much to share regarding his wishes, love for humanity and the sacredness of time,” the message continued. “Those days will come. For now we ask for peaceful privacy as we grieve our loving husband, father, son, brother, and friend.”

Among those who mourned his death was professional wrestler Stacy Keibler, who shared she was with James during his final days.
“Spending these final days with you has been a true gift from God,” she posted to Instagram. “I have never been so present in my life. When you know time is sacred, you don’t waste a single breath.”
“I will think of you every time I watch a sunset,” she wrote. “Every time I see a rainbow stretch across the sky. I’ll know you’re there.”
