Meta launches design studio to "define the next generation of products"

Technology company Meta has poached Apple‘s VP of human interface design Alan Dye to head up a creative studio that will focus on elevating design within the company.

Meta founder Mark Zuckerberg announced the creation of the new design studio that will “define the next generation of our products” in a post on Threads last week.

“Today we’re establishing a new creative studio in Reality Labs led by Alan Dye, who has spent nearly 20 years leading design at Apple,” he said.

“The new studio will bring together design, fashion, and technology to define the next generation of our products and experiences.”

Chance “to invent an entirely new design language”

The studio will be led by Apple’s head of user interface design Dye, who recently led the development of Liquid Glass.

According to Dye, Meta will be creating a design studio that will lead the development of both hardware and software.

“I’m stepping into a new role focused on the future of intelligent products and experiences,” said Dye in a post on LinkedIn.

“A chance to build something from the ground up, to invent an entirely new design language, to shape the culture and team from day one, and to lead hardware and software design in a way I’ve long believed in – with a clear goal to blend fashion, culture and technology,” he continued.

“That intersection has always energized me, and at this point in my life, that sense of possibility and renewal feels incredibly energizing.”

“AI glasses will change how we connect with technology”

Both Zuckerberg and Dye highlighted fashion within their statements, signalling the potential focus of the studio.

“We’re entering a new era where AI glasses and other devices will change how we connect with technology and each other,” added Zuckerberg.

“The potential is enormous, but what matters most is making these experiences feel natural and truly centered around people. With this new studio, we’re focused on making every interaction thoughtful, intuitive, and built to serve people.”

At Apple, Dye will be replaced by designer Steve Lemay as head of human interface design. He will join Molly Anderson, vice president of industrial design, as the leads of Apple’s design studio.

“Steve Lemay has played a key role in the design of every major Apple interface since 1999,” said Apple CEO Tim Cook in a statement to Bloomberg.

“He has always set an extraordinarily high bar for excellence and embodies Apple’s culture of collaboration and creativity.”

Apple recently spotlighted four emerging studios at Design Miami.Paris and unveil a mirrored obelisk by Sabine Marcelis at Apple Park.
