The world was introduced to  Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Mamoru Hosoda’s  newest animated film, Scarlet, at the 82nd Venice Film Festival on September 4. The time-traveling anime’s world premiere concluded with a ten-minute standing ovation from the audience. Actors Mana Ashida and Masaki Okada, who voice main characters Scarlet and Hijiri respectively, joined director Hosoda through the red carpet, photocall and the film premiere.

Scarlet tells the story of a princess from the past who travels to the afterlife after a violent attempt at revenge failed. She encounters a modern-day man whose compassion challenges her thirst for vengeance. Confronted by her nemesis, she must decide: cling to hatred, or discover a life beyond revenge.

Director Hosoda wants to send a message of love through the film, having had the inspiration for Scarlet after looking at the state of the world post-pandemic. “As we witness heartbreaking conflicts around the world, I believe that finding love and choosing to live together in unity is what will lead us towards something better. That’s why I want to share this new film with the world — now more than ever,” he says.
