LEMON GROVE, Calif. (FOX5/KUSI) — A man died after the Nissan Sentra he was riding in as a passenger collided with another vehicle while traveling on State Route 125, before being struck by a third vehicle, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).

According to CHP, at around 4:28 a.m. on Sunday, an unknown person was driving a 2023 Nissan Sentra northbound on SR-125, south of Spring Street, in Lemon Grove. The Nissan was also occupied by a 26-year-old passenger from San Diego.

Meanwhile, a 35-year-old man from Maryland, along with two female passengers, was reportedly driving a 2007 Mercedes E350 northbound on SR-125. According to the report, the Mercedes stopped on the right shoulder of the highway.

For reasons still under investigation, the driver of the Nissan reportedly drove onto the right shoulder and crashed into the back of the Mercedes. The Mercedes was pushed forward and remained on the right shoulder, while the Nissan came to a stop on the highway, blocking multiple lanes of the SR-125, according to CHP.

CHP says a 33-year-old San Diego woman who was driving a 2022 Ford Edge northbound on SR-125 was unable to avoid crashing into the Nissan. The force of the crash reportedly pushed the Nissan and Ford into the center median.

After the crash, one person in the Nissan fled on foot, while the 26-year-old passenger died from his injuries at the scene of the crash, according to CHP.

The driver and passengers of the Mercedes were reportedly transported to the hospital with minor injuries. The woman driving the Ford was also transported to the hospital with minor injuries.

According to CHP, it is unknown if alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crash.

Officers are encouraging anyone with information regarding the incident to contact the California Highway Patrol, El Cajon Area Office at 619-219-6900.
