SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — The public is invited to take part in a vigil at the La Mesa Police Department Monday night honoring Officer Lauren Craven who was killed in the line of duty on a San Diego highway.

A week after La Mesa Police Officer Craven, along with a 19-year-old driver, was killed by a vehicle after stopping to help at a multi-vehicle crash on I-8 in San Diego, her police department is honoring her with a candlelight vigil.

The vigil will be held at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 27, at the La Mesa Police Department at 8085 University Avenue in La Mesa and is open to the public.

“We will gather to remember Lauren’s light, courage, compassion, and steadfast commitment to helping others,” the police department stated.

The police department said candles will be available at the vigil, and it will include remarks, a moment of silence and a closing.

Thursday morning, hundreds honored Officer Craven as they lined the streets during a police procession that went through San Diego.

In the days following Officer Craven’s death at just 25 years old, the Peace Officers Research Association of California (PORAC) started a fundraiser to support her family. The Fund A Hero fundraiser so far has raised over $34,000 out of its $75,000 goal.

A memorial service for Officer Craven will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 28 at Skyline Church. View the funeral procession route here.
