SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Starting Wednesday, newly issued California Driver’s Licenses and Identification Cards will be sporting a makeover, as the DMV announced that the cards have received an updated design with advanced security features.
According to a press release from the DMV, the new look will feature the one-of-a-kind beauty of the Golden State’s landscape and will also have advanced security measures and updated technology.
The design will come equipped with enhanced anti-counterfeit features, including the addition of a digital security signature on one of the back barcodes. The new cards will also no longer have a magnetic strip on the back.
The new look will showcase the unique beauty of California with a design that implements images of redwood trees, poppies and the coastline, according to DMV Director Steve Gordon via a press release.
The last time the cards were updated with a new design and security features was in 2010, and then the look was changed again in 2018 with the introduction of REAL ID.
While the current driver’s licenses and ID cards will remain valid until their expiration date, the fee for an upgraded Driver’s License remains at $45, and $35 for Identification Cards.
