OCEANSIDE, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI) — Four people were rescued after a boat overturned in the Oceanside Harbor on Sunday afternoon, as powerful surf impacts the local coastline.

According to the Oceanside Fire Department, the incident happened around 12:25 p.m. as the vessel was attempting to exit the harbor. Rough ocean conditions likely played a role in the capsizing, officials said.

Oceanside Lifeguards and fire department crews quickly responded to the scene. All four individuals on board were rescued by lifeguards. They sustained only minor injuries and were evaluated at the scene. No hospital transfers were necessary.

Officials say the department’s Marine Safety Unit secured the overturned boat and successfully towed it back into the harbor.

Sunday’s incident comes as high surf batters much of the San Diego County coastline, impacts from Hurricane Narda.

The National Weather Service has issued a beach hazards statement which will remain in effect through Tuesday. This means there could be dangerous rip currents and breaking waves due to elevated surf (4 to 7 feet with sets to 8 feet for south and southwest facing beaches).

The Oceanside Fire Department is urging beachgoers and boaters “to exercise extra caution, check conditions before entering the water, and wear lifejackets when on the ocean.”
