SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — A portion of Interstate 5 that was fully closed to traffic over the weekend reopened ahead of schedule, Caltrans announced Sunday afternoon.

The closed portion of I-5 north, from I-8 to Mission Bay Drive, reopened nearly a full day ahead of its originally scheduled Monday morning reopening.

The construction closed a significant portion of the freeway in San Diego, routing drivers onto State Route 163 (SR-163), State Route 15 (SR-15) and Interstate 805 (I-805).

Caltrans said this is the second of several planned full freeway closures for the I-5 Asset Management Project.

According to Caltrans, this project is part of $1.6 billion worth of construction work in San Diego County and a segment of the $623 million investment to improve safety and infrastructure on I-5, I-805 and SR-78.
