SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — The San Diego Unified School District is making a sweeping move to transition away from some K-8 Middle Schools, forcing some middle school students to move to other schools in the district.
On Friday, the school district sent out letters to families alerting them of the transition. The schools impacted include Fulton, Bethune, Golden Hill and Audobon.
“We are transitioning some of our K-8 middle schools to become K-5 elementary schools starting in the 2026-27 school year,” said the district in a statement. “This transition will ensure students have access to everything they need to be well-rounded students who are prepared for post-secondary success.”
The district is suggesting Roosevelt, Dana and Correia as options for Golden Hill Middle School students when the time comes and Bell Middle School for students who attend Bethune.
“He’s going to be heartbroken,” said Paul Lobe, who’s grandson attends Bethune. “He’s not going to like it.”
The district acknowledges change is difficult and is offering events, meetings and resources to help families identify the best school.
Meanwhile Dr. Kyle Weinberg, president of the San Diego Education Association, issued a statement : “As union educators, we advocate for shared decision-making in all aspects of education, including decisions about school restructuring. The well-being of students, families, and educators in impacted school communities should be the guiding value for this conversation, and their voices should be included in all stages of the decision-making process.”
