SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI)– Residents of Southeastern San Diego may be getting an alternative and environmentally friendly form of transportation in the foreseeable future.

The San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG) and the Urban Collaborative Project CDC have partnered to launch Southeast Connect. This affordable microtransit ride-sharing service travels to specific destinations throughout the southeast region of San Diego County, including the Mount Hope, Chollas View and Emerald Hills neighborhoods.

The service provides zero-emission transportation, and each vehicle can seat up to four passengers.

Much like other ridesharing services, passengers will be able to reserve the electric vehicles via a smartphone app or by calling the hotline. The cost of rides has yet to be announced, but they will reportedly be at an affordable rate for the public.

While there is no date set for when the program will launch, the agencies will work hand-in-hand with the community members of Southeastern San Diego to gather feedback and use it to create the plan of operation.

The innovative service will be operated by Via Transportation and funded by SANDAG, the City of San Diego and the Clean Mobility Options Voucher program.
