Dezeen Showroom: British designer Samuel Wilkinson has designed a conical pendant light made from cork for lighting brand Zero Lighting.
Wilkinson decided to make the Corka light out of cork because of its sustainable credentials. Sourced from the bark of cork oak trees, the material is natural, renewable and biodegradable.
Corka has a conical shade available in three earthy shades – a light beige, a brown, and a dappled combination of the two – which is hung from a cable wrapped in black or natural linen up to 2.3 metres long.
The shade is gently rounded around the inner edge to create a soft, glowing light distribution.
“After being approached by Zero to design a sustainable pendant, we immediately began researching with a clear set of criteria: the lamp should be crafted from a single, renewable material, be versatile and durable, and produced using energy-efficient manufacturing processes,” said Wilkinson.
“Additionally, it needed to use the minimum number of electrical components,” he continued. “With these goals in mind, we developed Corka, a compact pendant crafted by pressing granulated cork into a two-part mould.”
