SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Padres All-Star reliever Jason Adam had to be carted off the field Monday due to a serious leg injury in a game against the Baltimore Orioles at Petco Park.
During the top of the seventh inning, Adam threw a pitch that was hit up the middle just behind him.
When he went to react to the hit and turn to make an attempt at the ball, he went down instantly in pain.
Adam could be seen holding his left knee in extreme discomfort.
Following the game, Padres manager Mike Shildt confirmed the injury as a quad tendon rupture, calling it “not favorable” and “pretty serious.”
“They will do further testing and I don’t want to be too bleak, but it’s not overly positive,” Shildt said.
Shildt expressed Adam is a big part of the locker room and the Padres’ success.
“He means a lot to us, we will be praying with him, for him, but we are going to be missing him,” Shildt said.
The 34-year-old right-handed pitcher has an 8-3 record with a 1.93 ERA this season.
To make matters worse, the Padres lost 4-3 to the Orioles.
Adam’s injury comes the same day the Padres reinstated center fielder Jackson Merrill from the 10-day injured list.
