An armed man was shot by police Thursday afternoon in Pacific Beach, according to witnesses.

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — An armed man was shot by police Thursday afternoon in Pacific Beach, authorities said.

The initial call to law enforcement was about a man wielding an axe at Dawes Street and Thomas Avenue near St. Andrew’s by-the-Sea Episcopal Church, according to the San Diego Police Department.

Witnesses told FOX 5/KUSI the man, who is believed to be transient and seen in the area quite often wielding an axe, was trying to beat down a library door with the weapon.

Police confronted the man, which was followed by shots fired from law enforcement, according to witnesses. Witnesses say the man was struck several times after hearing at least eight shots.

The condition of the man is unknown at this time.

Authorities shut down the area to investigate the shooting.
