This week on Dezeen, Northumbria University graduate Hope Underwood unveiled a water harvesting system that can be retrofitted to domestic drainpipes to divert rainwater.

Mains to Rains, designed during Underwood’s final year on the university’s Design for Industry programme, is a modular, wall-mounted tank that collects and stores water from the downpipe. This water can then be used to flush the toilet.

We took a closer look at James McCrery, the architect who has been chosen by US president Donald Trump to design a 650-person banquet hall on the east side of the White House complex.

Known for being an outspoken proponent of classical architecture, McCrery runs his own studio, McCrery Architects. His previous work includes a gift shop at the US Supreme Court and the Cathedral of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus in Tennessee.

Producer Pharrell Williams and fashion designer Nigo have revealed designs for Japa Valley Tokyo, a commercial district in central Tokyo that they are developing with Japanese hospitality brand Not A Hotel.

Set to be located in the yet-to-be-built Yurakucho Park west of Tokyo’s Ginza neighbourhood, the district’s design centres around a large-scale sculpture by New York artist Kaws.

We revealed that two Stirling Prize-winning council homes on Norwich’s Goldsmith Street have been sold off for less than the average local house price under a controversial UK Government policy.

Just five years after they were built, two homes in the development designed by London architecture studio Mikhail Riches and Cathy Hawley were sold for around £215,424 under the Right to Buy policy.

Italy announced plans to build the world’s longest suspension bridge to Sicily

Plans are underway for an Italian bridge that will connect the island of Sicily to the mainland. At 3,666 metres, the Strait of Messina Bridge will become the world’s longest suspension bridge, if built.

The project, led by Italian construction company Webuild and the Strait of Messina company, is estimated to cost €13.5 billion (£11.8 billion) and will accommodate both road and rail transport. It’s expected to be completed in 2032.

We reported on the news that Helmut Swiczinsky, a founding partner Viennese studio Coop Himmelb(l)au, had passed away at the age of 81.

The news of the deconstructivist architect’s death was announced in an Instagram post written by fellow Coop Himmelb(l)au co-founder Wolf D Prix, in which he described Swiczinsky as an “outstanding” architect.
