Zaha Hadid Architects designs Hong Kong leisure complex as "a lifted village"

British studio Zaha Hadid Architects has completed Go Park Sai Sha, a multi-storey sports and commercial complex in Hong Kong linked by elevated ramps and walkways.

Positioned on a site between Ma On Shan Country Park and Three Fathoms Cove, Go Park Sai Sha comprises a mix of indoor and outdoor recreational facilities over 120,774 square metres, topped by rooftop gardens.

Go Park Sai Sha’s facilities are accessible from multiple directions and all interconnected, arranged over layers around a central plaza and linked by winding ramps and pathways.

According to Zaha Hadid Architects, this layout is designed to emulate a “lifted village”, which references the organisation of Hong Kong’s traditional mountain communities.

“The design develops two key principles: the concept of a ‘fabric landscape’ that pulls nature into the heart of the design, and a gentle ramp that navigates across multiple layers, defining a ‘lifted village’ that combines shopping, sports and entertainment within courtyards that are enriched by the surrounding nature,” said studio director Paulo Flores.

“Bridges within the design connect Sai Sha’s residents with areas for discovery, innovation and public events.”

Outside, Go Park Sai Sha’s leisure and recreational activities include playgrounds, rock climbing walls, golf ranges and tracks for cycling and running. There are also multiple pitches and courts for sports ranging from football and lacrosse to tennis and basketball.

Inside is an adaptable stadium with a capacity of 1,500 people, as well as schools for fencing and swimming, and a 25-metre indoor pool.

A centrepiece of the complex is the “primary ramp”, a walkway that Zaha Hadid Architects has snaked up through Go Park Sai Sha to meet a series of rooftop gardens.

These gardens span the entire complex, offering visitors views of the site and beyond to the nearby cove.

Founded in 1979, Zaha Hadid Architects is the eponymous studio of the late British-Iraqi architect Zaha Hadid. Today, the studio is led by Patrik Schumacher.

Also in Hong Kong, it recently completed The Henderson office skyscraper on the world’s most expensive site. Elsewhere, the studio recently revealed its designs for Khalid Bin Sultan City in the United Arab Emirates and Vilnius Airport terminal in Lithuania.
