Magic Wheelchair transforms wheelchairs into incredible costumes for kids and young adults, promoting inclusivity at San Diego Comic-Con.

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — While the sea of costumes at Comic-Con is a sight to behold, a special organization is taking cosplay at the event to the next level, while building a sense of inclusivity for all.

Magic Wheelchair is a nonprofit organization that transforms wheelchairs into incredible costumes for kids and young adults, and this year marks their fourth consecutive trip to San Diego Comic-Con.

The mission of the foundation is to bring communities together by transforming wheelchairs into magic and creating unforgettable moments for wheelchair users and their families.

And they did just that during the second day of Comic-Con in San Diego on Friday.

“We make these costumes for kids who use wheelchairs and young adults, and it’s all about inclusion and empowerment, and the costumes are kind of secondary to our mission,” Scottie Foertmeyer, the Outreach Director of Magic Wheelchair, said. “It’s all about self-esteem building in creating future self-advocates.”

Magic Wheelchair will be at Comic-Con throughout the convention and is part of a cosplay exhibit located inside the Exhibition Hall.

The foundation provided a fan with the experience of a lifetime after transforming her wheelchair into a gigantic Skeletor from the Masters of the Universe franchise.

“This was the most amazing experience,” said Meredith. “To be able to cosplay like everyone else and just feel like part of the party. It was so amazing.”

Magic Wheelchair is headquartered in Gresham, Oregon, and has built custom costumes for young people across the United States.
