The County of San Diego’s Vector Control will conduct pesticide-mist treatments this week on around 4,000 parcels in the Rolando area, including parts in San Diego and La Mesa.

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — The County of San Diego’s Vector Control will conduct pesticide-mist treatments this week on around 4,000 parcels in the Rolando area, including parts in San Diego and La Mesa.

The pesticide treatments are to help reduce the spread of West Nile Virus, which was detected in the area on June 24.

AquaDuet, a pesticide approved by the Environmental Protection Agency that poses low risks to people and pets, disappears in roughly 20 to 30 minutes, according to the county.

The spraying will take place from 1 a.m. to 6 a.m. on Wednesday, July 9 through Friday, July 11, depending on conditions.

Follow-up testing in the area also detected additional West Nile virus-positive mosquitoes nearby.

County officials encourage residents to stay inside, keep pets and pet bowls inside and close windows during treatment.

Symptoms of West Nile virus include headache, fever, nausea, fatigue, skin rash, or swollen glands. In rare cases, the virus can cause extreme illness or even death.

There have been no reported human cases of West Nile virus this year in San Diego County.

To avoid mosquitoes from gathering, the county advises to:

  • Dump out or remove any item inside or outside of homes that can hold water;
  • Protect yourself by wearing long sleeves and pants or use insect repellent when outdoors;
  • Report increased mosquito activity, unmaintained green swimming pools, and other mosquito-breeding sources, as well as dead birds — crows, ravens, jays, hawks and owls — to the County Vector Control Program by calling 858-694-2888 or emailing vog.ac.ytnuocdsobfsctd-f685d@rotcev.

More information on the pesticide treatments can be found on Vector Control’s Adult Mosquito Control Information webpage.
