Lemon Grove Councilmember Sitivi “Steve” Faiai, a beloved father, football coach, worship pastor, and community leader, died suddenly of a heart attack at the age of 50.

(FOX 5/KUSI) — Lemon Grove Councilmember Sitivi “Steve” Faiai, a beloved father, football coach, worship pastor and community leader, died July 8 of a sudden heart attack. He was 50.

Faiai, who was recently elected to the City Council, was also a defensive coordinator for the freshman football team at Helix High School in La Mesa.

Known widely throughout East County for his deep compassion and commitment to service, his death has left family, friends and community members stunned and grieving.

“It’s hard to lose your best friend. It’s hard to lose your dad who loves you so much,” said his eldest son, Cameron Faiai. “We had a great experience, a great relationship with our dad.”

Riley Faiai, his younger son, added, “I’m so grateful for everything he taught me. It still doesn’t feel real.”

Faiai’s passion for mentorship extended far beyond the football field. Known for making everyone feel included and valued, his legacy is one of love, humility and public service.

“He always made everybody feel loved and included,” Cameron said. “He brought out the best in everybody.”

Faiai told KUSI in an interview last October that it was his love for local youth that motivated him to run for public office.

“I noticed a lot of the kids we coached lived in Lemon Grove,” he said. “When people ask me why I ran for City Council, the reason is because I was running for the students I coached. I was running for their future. What’s the city of Lemon Grove going to look like for them?”

During his brief time on the council, Faiai focused on youth programs, public safety and solutions to homelessness. His impact, however short-lived, was deeply felt.

At Tuesday’s La Mesa City Council meeting, Councilmember Lauren Cazares offered an emotional tribute.

“Your grief is shared by all of us who were lucky to know Steve and witness the way he led—with humanity, heart and unwavering support for at-risk communities,” she said.

In addition to his roles in government and education, Faiai served as a worship pastor. His family says he always viewed his purpose as serving others through compassion, understanding and faith.

“He didn’t have a mean bone in his body,” said Riley. “He was so kind, so sweet, and he just loved everyone.”

The City of Lemon Grove released a statement honoring Faiai, describing his leadership as “profound” and marked by “compassion and integrity.”

“From advocating for youth programs and public safety to championing solutions to homelessness, Steve truly led from the heart,” the statement read. “Councilmember Faiai’s dedication and care for the Lemon Grove community will not be forgotten.”

Funeral arrangements are still being finalized. A GoFundMe page has been created to help the family.
