SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — The Vice President of the United States, J.D. Vance, has been in San Diego Fourth of July weekend attending several events as the finance chair of the Republican Party, as well as to receive an award from the Claremont Institute.

San Diegans might have noticed a motorcade around town Saturday and Sunday as JD Vance attended the 2025 Statesmanship Award dinner in his honor. Right-wing activist Charlie Kirk served as the emcee for the dinner Saturday evening, and tickets started at $2,500 per seat.

A protest was scheduled for Saturday evening at the Rancho Santa Fe Golf Club in opposition to Vance’s visit, posted on social media by “Be the Change SD,” which also said a protest Saturday morning reportedly kept him from hosting an event at Solana Beach.

Sunday night, a crowd was starting to gather around Vance’s motorcade outside Soichi Sushi on Adams Avenue in San Diego. The motorcade and secret service could be seen leaving around 7 p.m. Sunday.

On Monday, Vance is expected to attend a previously unreported round table in San Diego, according to the New York Times, which cites two people with knowledge of the event.

Vance is no stranger to San Diego, having visited several times for official and personal business as his wife, Second Lady Usha Vance, is from San Diego.
